Sign Petition for new Motorway Junction

Please pay a visit to the link and sign the petition, this is a major issue, we need to get Highways Agency pay for it, any new Town(s) built near Broadclyst will push more traffic towards Cullompton

  1. Or if you are passing Cullompton Town Council Office, please call in and sign a paper version of petition. Many thanks.

  2. Good luck with this petition, and the blog in general. I have signed a paper copy.

  3. I’ve lost track of whether we’re signing for a full or (more feasible?) a cut-price M5 junction (see below).

When I lived in Wycombe (Bucks), there was (and is) a relatively unusual but not unique sort of cut-price motorway (M40) junction, at the East end of High Wycombe (Loudwater), ie relatively cheap occupying relatively little land.

This bore in mind that people living in that area often wanted to go to and from London, but less often to Oxford. Thus for Westbound (towards Oxford) traffic there was an M40 exit but no entry, vice versa for Eastbound traffic. If those locals wanted to go to Oxford they would first have to drive West through High Wycombe town centre to the next exit. This all had the byproduct that the narrow A road between East Wycombe and the next town (Beaconsfield) was untouched by Wycombe-London traffic.

Similarly, suppose it were felt that the main problem here was lorries from Hele driving to and from Bristol, currently via Fore Street Cullompton. A cutprice Hele M5 junction could be built such that Hele traffic could join the M5 Northbound but not Southbound (and come off there only when returning from the North). Hele lorries bound for Plymouth would still have to take the B road via Pinhoe, but Cullompton would be unscathed throughout.

Is this a useful compromise position in the negotiations, ie Hele to be only entry for Northbound traffic and exit for Southbound traffic?

(Incidentally thank you for I think successfully attaching my photo - I notice whilst currently editing my preview - well done.)

  4. The petition is for a NEW junction south of the town towards Exeter. At the moment the Highways Agency don't want to talk about- they wish to spend all the money improving J29 for the second time !

  5. I have now signed this petition but I do think that a new junction isn't the complete answer. We need to be able to pedestrianise the centre of town for it to florish. This means an Eastern relief road as well. At the moment we seem likely to get a road tanking through the middle of the community fields which would be pretty bad I feel. An outer eastern route seems to have been ruled out. However has anyone considered a third option? If a suitable site could be found, a new football club and cricket pitch (out of the flood plain!) would allow the road to be right next to the railway and have a far smaller impact on the fields. This could be a benefit fot the cricket and football clubs too - new facilities and no flooding in winter. Any comments?

Finally, public transport needs improvement. One simple change would be to route the 1(A) via the Sowton Industrial Estate. I am sure that a lot of Cullomptonians work there and would be more likely to take the bus if it actually went near their place of work. Of course a proper park and ride scheme for the station would be great but more long term. I am sure there are other ideas about this but Cully gets 1 mention in the Devon transport plan and that is only where they pat themselves on the back about the Culm Valley Connect buses!

  6. Hi Nick, Thanks for comments, its nice to know someone has a thinking cap on !

Relief roads have caused much debate, various valid views from all quarters, we have considered the relocation of the sports facilities, there are issues there, how much will it cost, I doubt if a developer will pay for a new road AND for relocation, town has considered this and it is still an option.

I have just come from a transport meeting today, its an ongoing topic to long to put here, government policy is to provide better transport links and reduce use of car and pollution, it again takes money, its a slow process.

Park & Ride, well there is an outline planning application that has a condition on it to contribute to a new bus service between Cullompton & Exeter, the town council has asked for a proper park and ride AND a bus terminal, MDDC have not yet put this in the projected local plan !
